If the lyrics Lollipop, Lollipop, oh loli, lolil, loi easily stick in your head, blame a horse named Lolly Pop.

June is National Candy Month and according to CandyUSA.com 99% of households buy chocolate or candy at least once a week and most people in the US enjoy chocolate or candy 2 or 3 times a week, consuming 22 pounds of candy a year. Apparently more than one type of lollipop is stuck in our head!

As early as Ancient Egypt and the Middle Ages, boiled honey dipped fruits were placed on sticks to keep the recipients hands clean. Similarly soft boiled sugar was placed on sticks in 17th Century England as a treat. However, it was George Smith who first created the modern hard stick candy in 1908, which later began being mass produced in 1912, then trademarked and named Lolly Pop for a famous race horse in 1931.
